Avery Eugene Merrill, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday evening, surrounded by the family he loved. He was born on January 29, 1941, and lived his life with humility, kindness, and a steady Christian faith that guided him every day.
He was born to the late Theodore and Margaret Merrill. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Troy Merrill, Charles Joseph Merrill, and Dale Merrill, and by his sister, Jeanette Owen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Merrill. His wife, Barbara, was his devoted caregiver in his final years. He leaves behind his children, Timothy Avery Merrill and Kimberly Waldrop, along with Kimberly’s partner, Robert Brittain. He is also survived by his brother, Tommy Merrill, and by his grandsons: Joshua Allen and his husband, Jacob Duncan; Zachary Merrill and his wife, Anastasia Merrill; and Eric Merrill.
Avery worked hard all his life and held many jobs in local businesses over the years, including Mitchell Bissell, A&P Grocery, Ecusta Paper Corporation, and others throughout the community. He later retired from Turkey Creek. Folks who worked with him knew him as a dependable man who took pride in doing things the right way.
He was a gentle, soft‑spoken man who would help anyone who needed it. He lived out his faith through kindness, honesty, and simple acts of service. He never asked for much and gave freely of what he had.
Avery enjoyed spending time in his garden, tending his plants with patience and care. He also had a natural curiosity and a love of learning that stayed with him throughout his life.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, humility, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A man of faith, integrity, and quiet strength, whose love endures in the lives he touched.
