Daniel Pitts Elliott, died just short of his 101 st birthday on July 11, 2026. Dan was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on August 13,1925 to Enola Rantz and LMarr Elliott.
After serving in the Army Combat Engineers in Europe during WWII, he returned to Louisiana and graduated from LSU with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later received his MBA from Georgia State University. Dan was a retired licensed Professional Engineer and Certified Cost Engineer. After graduating from LSU Dan moved to Severna Park, Maryland where he met and married Barbara (Babs) Bixler in 1954. Sailing was always a favorite hobby of Dan’s. During his time on the Severn River in Maryland he built his National One Design sailboat, Mint Julip. He went on to win many races including being East Coast Champion for several years. He was also a founding member of Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis, Maryland.
Dan spent most of his career as a cost estimator with a consulting firm in Atlanta, GA. They designed and supervised the building of industrial plants. He traveled both nationally and internationally with these projects. During his career he was named “Engineer of the Year in Private Practice” in Atlanta by the Ga Society of Professional Engineers. He was active in various professional organizations including being the founder of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Association of Cost Engineers and also serving as their national president.
During their time in Atlanta, Dan and Barbara were active volunteers in various community organizations along with being one of the founding families of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church which became the center of their spiritual lives. He also volunteered at the Scottish Rite Hospital’s Mission group assisting the Chaplain’s office.
In 1998, they relocated to Brevard, NC where he continued to volunteer in the community serving on various boards including Transylvania Regional Hospital Foundation, TRH Aux and Connestee Falls HOA Board. He was also active at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and served weekly on the Pastoral Care Committee. For many years he could be seen working the cash register at The Shop of St. Philip’s.
Dan had a deep love for his family and treasured spending time with them. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Barbara, and his children, Pamela Elliott Watson (Brad), and Scott Elliott (Melissa), 3 grandchildren, Brendan Elliott (Taylor), Kevin Elliott (Emma), and Kathleen Elliott and his great-grandsons Charles Bixler Elliott and Brooks Daniel Elliott. He is also survived by his niece, Patricia Elliott, and nephews, Douglas Elliott (Yanna) and Donald Elliott (Trish), and great-nephew Todd Elliott.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Transylvania Christian Ministry Inc (Sharing House), PO Box 958, Brevard, NC 28712 or St. Philip’s General Foundation Endowment.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Dan’s life will be help on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 2pm at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Brevard.
