Frederick William McGarrahan

Frederick William McGarrahan, 90, of Brevard, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2026. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late John B. and Madeline Donahue McGarrahan. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cathleen McGarrahan.

A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, he was retired from the Warwick, Rhode Island Fire Department before retiring to Brevard, North Carolina, and becoming a member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He was a kind and loving husband and father, often generous to a fault. He also had a great sense of humor, was always quick with a pun and was quite the prankster – both with his family at home and his fire department “family,” as well. He enjoyed elk and deer hunting in Maine and Colorado and snorkeling for lobsters off the Atlantic coast. His greatest love was his family. He was a man of honor and integrity and was one of the last true gentlemen.

His loving survivors include his wife of 68 years, Pat McGarrahan; their children, Trish McGarrahan, Nancy McGarrahan and Maureen Cashin; grandchildren, Richard Cann (Shelly), Nicole Cann, Brianna Wolf DeFelice (Jesse), Takiya Saavedra (Frank), Garridon Grady (Nikki), Mikaela Perry (Jonathon) and Brandon Cashin; his brother, Peter McGarrahan (Alice) and his sister, Sister Jane McGarrahan, RSM. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Isabella DeFelice, Madelyn Cann, Mackenzie Cann, Alyssa Saavedra, Demitrius Saavedra, Amaya Saavedra, Donovan Saavedra, Jhovanni Grady, Ghiano Grady, Lucio Grady, Kaden Cashin, Sam Cashin, Boruch Sholom Perry, Miriam Mushka Perry, Zissel Basya Perry, Menachem Mendel Perry, Shoshana Reizel Perry and Moshe Levi Perry. His great-great grandchildren also survive him: Elijah Grady and Nizyla Grady.

A Memorial Mass to honor Frederick McGarrahan will be held at 10:00am, July 25, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
