Brevard - Harriet Anne Baker



Harriet Anne Baker, 89, died June 11, 2012 at The Oaks nursing home of Brevard, NC.



She was born April 23, 1923, in Lawrenceville, IL to the Rev. Walter and Bernice Harrison Baker. She was predeceased by two brothers; the Rev. Wm. S. Baker and Fred A. Baker.



After graduating from Heyworth (IL) Community High School and the University of Illinois she went on to intern at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, IA, becoming a therapeutic dietitian. Her professional career was spent at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, NC and for many years at Stanly County/Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle, NC. Harriet was active in her church. She served on its Session and as president of Women of the Church, held other offices, and sang in the choir. She was a mainstay for flowers and food at church functions and assisted many groups in the community with her dietary expertise.

She was also instrumental in landscaping the Snuggs and Marks houses. In 1989 the Albemarle Woman's Club named her Woman of the Year and in 1991 she received the Extension Homemakers' Community Service Award. The

Extension and Community Association named her Member of the Year in 2007. For 23 years she was a member of the Daytimers Club, served as its president, and was honored by the Hawthorn Garden Club with a life membership in the Garden Club of North Carolina.



She is survived by two sisters; Betty Dahm of Ames, IA and Virginia Shuman of Tucson, AZ as well as one brother; Walter Baker of Louisville, KY and numerous nieces and nephews



A Memorial Service is planned for mid-afternoon, August 19, at the First Presbyterian Church, 126 W. North St., Albemarle, NC 28001, with the Rev. Elizabeth Ayscue officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Albemarle to the charity of donor's choice.
