Jane Louise Mitchell Cox, 86, of Brevard, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026. She was the wife of John Edward Cox, Sr. A native of Bogalusa, LA, she was the daughter of Acey and Letha Mae Mitchell. In addition to her husband and her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Acey Mitchell, Jr., and sisters Virginia Hutchins and Pauline Carroll.
She is survived by her children, Letha Louise Cox (David) of Brevard, John Edward Cox, Jr. (Karen) of Arden, Nancy Ann Cox Kilpatrick of Hendersonville, and Jefferson Hyde Cox, II (Rachel) of Carmel, IN, and sister, Linda Mitchell Dillard (Sam) of Fort Adams, MS; grandchildren James Mitchell Raines of Asheville, Sarah Jane Kilpatrick of Travelers Rest, Rebecca Louise Pelayo (Romil) of Savannah, GA, Meredith Scott of Fletcher, John Mitchell Cox (Charley) of Talbott, TN, and Jackson Harris Cox of Knoxville, Sarah Lela Lutz of Morganton, and Jesse Robert Lutz of Salmon, ID. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Braden Holmes Kilpatrick of Travelers Rest, Cressida Star Pelayo of Savannah, GA, Umbriel Sylvestre Pelayo of Savannah, GA and Miller Ann Cox of Talbott, TN.
Jane and John were married August 1, 1959, in Carson City, NV. Prior to her wedding, she was a telephone operator in New Orleans, LA, and served in the United States Army in San Francisco, CA.
After relocating to Brevard with her husband, she enjoyed gardening, quilting, knitting, crocheting, painting, pottery, baking, canning, all of which were self-taught and of which she shared with others throughout the years.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Dunn's Creek Cemetery, 1904 See Off Mountain Road, Brevard, NC 28712. Reverend Robert Ponder will officiate.
