John Dorner III, 88, of Hendersonville, formerly of Brevard, went to his Heavenly home on August 15, 2026. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he was the son of the late Margie "Nell" Meek Dorner and John Dorner, Jr., both of Forsyth, Georgia.
He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL and Marian Military Institute in Marian, AL. He was an Eagle Scout, a 32nd Degree Mason and was active in the Shrine Motor Corp. He was employed as the Area Sales Manager in Miami, FL for Philip Morris, USA. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Miami Food Trades Association and later owned several retail grocery stores in Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, FL and after he failed his first retirement he became a grant writer, writing grants for Fire Departments.
He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Ft. Lauderdale and an active member of the Rotary Club of Brevard and Chairman of the Rotary Youth leadership Camp for several years. He served as Chairman of the Red Cross, Brevard Chapter and served on the Board of Directors of the Red Cross in Asheville; he was Past-President of the Cedar Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and served 16 years on the Sheriff’s advisory council. He was a member of the Transylvania County Planning Board and was Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Transylvania County.
He was a member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church and past member of First United Methodist Church of Brevard.
His loving survivors include his wife of 63 years, Connie Dorner; his son John Dorner IV (Carolyn), and daughter Cheryl Keelan (Bill); Grandchildren Kellie Ann Davis (Caleb), John “Quint” Dorner V (Sarah), Kristen Toler (Caleb), Jacob “Jake” Dorner, William “Will” Keelan, JR., and 7 great-grandchildren.
A service remembering John Dorner III will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 645 Bert Lane, Brevard, NC 28712. There will be graveside service in Forsyth, GA on Monday, August 24. 2026 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St Jude's Childrens Hospital at stjude.org or to Shriners Children's Attn: Shriners Children's Processing Center, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394.
