John Benton Felty, 88, passed away on February 3, 2013 at Cedar Mountain House.

Born in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late John Adam and Phyllis Benton Felty. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Vaughn Felty, who died in 1992 and his sister Jane Dillen. He was a member and past Deacon of Little River Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years.

John, known as "Murph" by close friends and family was blessed with congenial nature and warm sense of humor. He loved sports, particularly baseball, playing both collegiately and professionally for the Florida Indians. He was a graduate of Gettysburg College and Penn State University where he received a Masters Degree in Horticulture.

John served his country during WWII in the US Army, where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for extraordinary bravery and composure under fire in the European Campaign.

He served his community wherever he was tutoring children of all ages as a volunteer. He served as a member of Civitan in Pompano Beach, FL. After moving to Brevard he coached in many youth sports and served as assistant baseball coach at Brevard High School from 1979-1982.

He moved to Brevard in 1967 working for the State of NC Horticulture Crops Research Station. In 1968 he started his own company, Pisgah Pest Control, where he operated the business until he retired in 1988. The business still remains in the family.

He is survived by his wife, Marian McMahon Felty, of 20 years, his son; John Wayne Felty and his wife Cheri Miller of Brevard, NC, two daughters; Rebecca and Anne Felty both of Brevard, NC, six grandchildren; Jenni, Allison, Katy, Loie, Nora and Noel, six great grandchildren; Lilah, Samuel, Rose, Izzy, Hattie and Miles, three nieces; Debbie, Carol and Janie and one nephew; Butch.

A Memorial Service was held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Little River Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Farmer officiating. The family received friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
