John "J.C." Hensley

J.C. Hensley, 82, of Fletcher, NC, went home to be with the Lord and was reunited with his family members in Heaven on Thursday, May 22, 2025. He was born on February 22, 1943 in Yancey County, NC as the first child of the late Edith Phillips Hensley and Grayson Hensley. In addition to his parents, J.C. was preceded in death by his brother Jackie, and his namesake and great-grandson, Baby John.

He graduated from Brevard High School in 1961 and in August of that year married his high school sweetheart. He went to work at Olin Corporation in Pisgah Forst and later, after completing locomotive engineering school, worked the rest of his career as a locomotive engineer in Asheville, NC and Atlanta, GA.

There was nothing more important to J.C. than his family, and from an early age and throughout his life he sacrificed his own interests to care for and support them. He was a loving and devoted husband, daddy, granddaddy and great-granddaddy. J.C. never heard of a sport he didn’t like. He was an avid UNC Tarheel and Atlanta Braves fan- but his wife liked the Carolina Panthers way more than he did. He had a great sense of humor and loved Jennifer’s chicken casserole and John’s cast iron ribeyes.

J.C. is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois; his daughter Jennifer Wentz and husband Layne, of Pisgah Forest; his son John Hensley, Jr., and wife Jenny, of Asheville, NC; his grandchildren: Kayla Gaddy and husband Corey, John Hensley III and wife Melissa, Jordan Bales and husband JR, and Caroline Adams and husband Austin; his great-grandchildren: Alexandria, Hensley and Saylor; his sisters: Linda Hebert of Forest City, NC and Brenda McCall of Brevard, NC; his sister-in-law Mary Lou Hensley of Brevard, NC and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Brevard Wesleyan Church in Brevard, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until time for the service.
