Margaret Bromfield

Margaret Barnette Bromfield, 101, passed away August 3, 2016. Born November 15, 1914 in Henderson County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Adgar Washington and Mary Hollingsworth Barnette. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, George Mason Bromfield; her sisters Stella Gilliland, Ethel Owens, Eva Jones, Myrtle Barnette, Lela Price and Mary Alta Payne; and her brother Samuel Barnette who died in the Navy during WWII, and her brother Thomas, who died as a small child.

Her early years were spent in Brevard, NC where she met and married the love of her life, George Mason Bromfield. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage before George's death in 1990. They lived in a number of places during George's career with the United States government. Upon retirement, they moved back to Brevard from Falls Church, VA, and built a home looking toward the Blue Ridge Parkway and overlooking the French Broad Valley.

Margaret was a long-time member of St. Philips Episcopal Church. An avid golfer, she was a past board member of Glen Cannon Country Club where she also served two separate terms as president of the Women's Golf Association. She took pride in relating the recognition she received for making a hole-in-one at the Glen Cannon Golf Course. Margaret also enjoyed recalling her flight from Asheville to London aboard the supersonic jet, Concorde. Last year Margaret was recognized by the Eastern Star Pisgah Chapter No. 198 in Brevard for being their first member to receive the Grand Chapter, 75 Year membership medallion.

Surviving are her sister, Lois Barnette Kellar of Brevard; nieces Margaret Cole of Arden, NC and Carolyn Gaines of Columbia, SC; nephews Robert Kellar of Brevard, James Kellar of Brevard, Ronald Kellar of Kenova, WV and Butch Payne of Asheville, NC; a number of great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

The family held a private graveside service at St. Paul's in the Valley Cemetery in Brevard.
