Mary Kathryn Fisher

Mary Kathryn Fisher, 79, of Brevard, NC, died peacefully on November 27, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

The daughter of the late Dwight L. Moffitt and Kathryn Irene Spratt Moffitt, she is preceded in death by her parents, her devoted husband of 44 years, Lloyd G. Fisher (2016), and her niece, Nathalie Moffitt Britt (2025).

Mary Kathryn was a seventh-generation native of Transylvania County. She was a Brevard High School graduate, Class of ’64, where she served on the Homecoming Court. She held dear the friendships formed during her childhood.

Following high school, Mary Kathryn attended Meredith College, where she received a degree in English and graduated with the Class of ’68. While at Meredith, Mary Kathryn played Santa on 2nd Brewer in December of 1966. She co-chaired Cornhuskin’ and wrote the 1967 Cornhuskin’ skit, in which her class won first place. The theme was literature—her wheelhouse. She always cherished her college days and especially the friends she made at Meredith.

After graduating from Meredith, she and her college suitemate, Jessie Dixon Ives, moved to Winston-Salem, NC. There she taught English at Forbush High School for four years. Mary Kathryn also sponsored the Junior–Senior Prom at Forbush and remained in contact with a few of her favorite students. She later taught English at Brevard High School and maintained friendships with several of her students there until the end of her life. Teaching was always her calling, and many of her students can still recite the Prologue to The Canterbury Tales.

In 1972, she married Lloyd Fisher, a graduate of UNC–Chapel Hill, Class of ’68. Mary Kathryn and Lloyd had been childhood friends, and the first date either of them ever went on was with each other—to a school dance in the 8th grade.

Mary Kathryn and Lloyd returned to their hometown of Brevard, NC, and in 1975 they were blessed with twins, Amy and Art.

On January 1, 1977, Mary Kathryn and Lloyd opened Fisher Realty. Over the years, the business grew to two offices and a team of professional agents. After college, Amy and Art both returned to Brevard to work in the family business. Amy now runs the business, and Fisher Realty continues to be one of the most successful real estate companies in WNC.

Mary Kathryn had a passion for books, animals (especially wild animals), and travel. She was somewhat of an “animal whisperer,” and this gift afforded her many interesting experiences with animals, both wild and domestic. Always eager to see what was over the hill or around the next bend, Mary Kathryn traveled extensively with her family. Together they visited nearly 90 countries and all seven continents. She always looked for travel deals, saying that if a place was safe and clean, she would rather travel on a budget so she could visit more places. She exclaimed, “The Eiffel Tower is the Eiffel Tower regardless of where you slept last night.” Sometimes her deals became a family topic, as she often found amazing trips at such great prices that her family feared they would have to work their way through the vacation.

She is survived by her daughter, Amelia (Amy) Fisher (Erik Wahus), and granddaughter, Caroline Fisher Wahus, of Brevard, NC; her son, Arthur (Art) Fisher, of Brevard, NC, currently serving as U.S. Ambassador to Austria; her brother, Hank (Robin) Moffitt of Pisgah Forest, NC; her niece, Hilary (Daniel) McCall, and great-nephew, Tucker McCall, of Brevard, NC; her niece, Kara (Greg) Mulkey Ries of Florida; her nephew, Greg Mulkey (Kristin) of Mooresville, NC; several other nieces and nephews; her caregiver, Flavie Brownlee; and two beloved cats, Mister Itty and Callie.

Mary Kathryn believed deeply in the mission of the Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club of Transylvania County and the profound impact it has on the community by creating a safe space for children to learn and grow while allowing parents to work.
